The FAMAS (Fusil d'Assaut de la Manufacture d'Armes de Saint-Etienne) is a French bullpup assault rifle designed in the 1970s. Chambered in 5.56x45mm NATO, the FAMAS features a unique design that places the action and magazine behind the trigger, allowing for a shorter overall length without sacrificing barrel length. This made it highly maneuverable in close-quarters combat while maintaining accuracy at range.

Adopted by the French military in 1978, the FAMAS saw widespread use in various conflicts, including peacekeeping missions in Africa, the Gulf War, and the War in Afghanistan. Its distinctive shape and high rate of fire made it easily recognizable, and it became a symbol of French military power during the late 20th century. However, the FAMAS was known for being difficult to maintain and expensive to produce.

By the 21st century, the FAMAS was being phased out in favor of newer rifles like the HK416, but it remains an iconic weapon in French military history.
