The Mannlicher M1888 rifle was a revolutionary bolt-action firearm designed by Ferdinand Mannlicher and introduced as the standard infantry rifle for the Austro-Hungarian Army. It was notable for its straight-pull bolt mechanism, which allowed for faster cycling of the action compared to traditional turn-bolt designs. Chambered for the 8x50mmR Mannlicher cartridge, the M1888 utilized an en-bloc clip system that remained in the rifle until the last round was fired, after which the clip automatically ejected. This innovative feature simplified reloading and increased the rate of fire.

Manufactured primarily by the Osterreichische Waffenfabriks-Gesellschaft (OEWG) in Steyr, the Mannlicher M1888 was produced in large numbers to equip the Austro-Hungarian military. Although exact production figures are uncertain, estimates suggest that hundreds of thousands of rifles were made during its service period. The rifle saw widespread use in the Austro-Hungarian Empire and was later exported to several nations. Over time, variants and updates, including modifications to accept smokeless powder cartridges, extended the rifle's service life and adaptability.

The Mannlicher M1888 gained notoriety for its innovative design and influence on subsequent rifle development, particularly in Europe.
