The Perino Model 1908 was one of the world's earliest fully automatic machine guns, developed in Italy by designer Giuseppe Perino. It featured a unique feeding mechanism that utilized ammunition trays instead of the more common belts or magazines of the time. The weapon was chambered in the 6.5x52mm Carcano cartridge and was water-cooled to sustain prolonged firing. Its heavy construction and tripod mounting made it well-suited for defensive positions and static engagements, where reliability and sustained firepower were paramount.

Production of the Perino Model 1908 was relatively limited compared to contemporary machine guns such as the Maxim or Hotchkiss, with several hundred units manufactured by the outbreak of World War I. It served primarily with Italian forces during the conflict, where it was deployed in defensive roles along the mountainous front lines against Austro-Hungarian forces. Despite its innovative design, the Perino faced logistical challenges due to its unique ammunition feeding system, which made resupply and maintenance more difficult in the field.

While the Perino Model 1908 was overshadowed by later designs such as the Fiat-Revelli machine gun, it remains notable as a pioneering step in Italian automatic weapons development. Its service during World War I highlighted both its strengths in reliability and sustained fire and its weaknesses in portability and logistical complexity. Today, the Perino is a rare and historically significant firearm, studied by historians and collectors as an early example of military innovation in the era of modern warfare.
