The UGM-133 Trident II, also known as the Trident D5, is a submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) designed by the United States as the successor to the Trident I (C4). Developed by Lockheed Martin, it features greater accuracy, extended range, and a significantly larger payload capacity than its predecessor. The Trident II utilizes advanced solid-fuel rocket motors and cutting-edge inertial navigation systems with GPS updates, enabling precision targeting suitable for counterforce missions against hardened targets.

The Trident II was introduced into service in 1990 and has been deployed aboard Ohio-class ballistic missile submarines of the U.S. Navy and Vanguard-class submarines of the United Kingdom's Royal Navy. Over 540 missiles have been produced, and they remain in active service as a critical component of both nations' nuclear deterrence strategies. The missile can carry multiple independently targetable reentry vehicles (MIRVs), with a capacity of up to 12 warheads, though treaties limit the operational warhead count to fewer per missile.

Renowned for its accuracy and reliability, the Trident II has become a cornerstone of strategic nuclear deterrence in the 21st century. Its ability to penetrate modern anti-ballistic missile defenses and deliver precision strikes has made it a pivotal element in maintaining the credibility of submarine-based deterrents. The Trident II continues to be upgraded and is expected to remain in service through at least the 2040s, ensuring its place as one of the most effective SLBMs ever developed.
