The Spanish Alfa M44 medium machine gun was a domestically designed and produced weapon intended to provide the Spanish armed forces with a reliable, belt-fed automatic weapon. Developed during the 1940s by the Alfa company, the M44 was chambered in the 7.92x57mm Mauser cartridge, the standard rifle round for Spain at the time. The weapon featured an air-cooled barrel and a recoil-operated firing mechanism, closely modeled on the German MG 42 but adapted to suit Spain's manufacturing capabilities and military needs. The M44 was equipped with a quick-change barrel system to prevent overheating during sustained fire, making it suitable for both defensive and offensive roles on the battlefield.

Production of the Alfa M44 began in the mid-1940s, but its output was relatively modest due to Spain's limited industrial resources and political isolation during the post-Civil War period. Estimates suggest that fewer than 8,000 units were produced by the early 1950s, as the weapon was gradually supplanted by more modern designs. The M44 was primarily issued to Spanish infantry units and border defense forces, where it served as a standard medium machine gun. While Spain remained neutral during World War II, the M44 saw some use in internal security operations and training exercises within the Spanish military.

Despite its potential, the Alfa M44 was criticized for its complexity and occasional reliability issues in harsh conditions, particularly in dusty or humid environments. Its maintenance-intensive design required skilled operators to ensure consistent performance, which limited its effectiveness in field conditions. While it never achieved the widespread acclaim of its German counterparts, the M44 holds a notable place in Spanish military history as an effort to create self-sufficient arms production during a challenging period. Today, surviving examples of the Alfa M44 are rare and highly prized by collectors, representing a unique chapter in Spain's military and industrial heritage.
