The Barrett M82, also known as the M82A1, is a semi-automatic, long-range anti-materiel rifle chambered in .50 BMG (12.7x99mm NATO). Designed by Ronnie Barrett in the early 1980s, the rifle features a recoil-operated, rotating bolt system and a 10-round detachable box magazine. The M82's distinctive design includes a large, fluted barrel and a prominent muzzle brake, which helps mitigate the immense recoil produced by the powerful .50 caliber cartridge. Built for engaging hard targets at extended distances, the M82 is capable of neutralizing enemy personnel, disabling vehicles, and destroying infrastructure with precision and effectiveness.

Production of the M82 began in the mid-1980s, with the U.S. military officially adopting it as the M82A1 during the Gulf War. Since then, it has been widely used by military and law enforcement forces across the world, including in conflicts such as the War in Afghanistan, the Iraq War, and various counterterrorism operations. Its ability to engage targets at ranges exceeding 1,800 meters, combined with its semi-automatic capability, has made it a preferred choice for snipers and anti-materiel teams. The rifle has also been upgraded over time, with variants such as the M82A3 and M107 featuring improved optics compatibility, lighter materials, and enhanced durability.

The Barrett M82 has become one of the most recognizable sniper rifles in the world, gaining notoriety for its immense firepower and long-range effectiveness. It has appeared in numerous military films, video games, and documentaries, further solidifying its reputation as an iconic weapon. Beyond its military applications, the M82 has also been used in civilian long-range shooting competitions, though its high power and large caliber restrict its use in many countries. Despite this, the rifle remains a symbol of precision, power, and innovation in modern firearms design.
