Designed by the Tula KBP Instrument Design Bureau, the Metis-M features enhanced range, penetration capabilities, and an improved warhead. The system is lightweight and can be deployed by a small infantry team, making it highly mobile and effective in various combat environments. It utilizes a semi-automatic command-to-line-of-sight (SACLOS) guidance system, requiring the operator to track the target until impact. The missile is equipped with a tandem-charge HEAT (High-Explosive Anti-Tank) warhead, specifically designed to counter modern armored vehicles equipped with explosive reactive armor (ERA). Production of the Metis-M began in the late 1990s, with the system entering service in the Russian military and being exported to various allied nations. The missile has a maximum range of 2 kilometers and can penetrate up to 950mm of rolled homogeneous armor (RHA) after ERA. The system's portability and ease of use make it a valuable asset for infantry units requiring a lightweight yet potent anti-armor capability. Over the years, upgraded variants such as the Metis-M1 have been developed, featuring extended range and improved penetration power. The Metis-M has seen extensive combat use in various conflicts, including in the Middle East, Ukraine, and other regions where modern asymmetric warfare is prevalent. Its effectiveness against heavily armored vehicles, including main battle tanks, has made it a significant threat on the battlefield. The missile's cost-effectiveness and reliability have contributed to its widespread use, making it a popular choice for both state militaries and non-state actors. Despite newer anti-tank systems being developed, the Metis-M remains a formidable weapon due to its balance of affordability, portability, and armor-penetrating capabilities.
