The Sten Mk V was an improved version of the widely-used British Sten submachine gun, introduced in 1944 during World War II. Unlike earlier models, the Mk V was designed with enhancements to improve durability, ergonomics, and overall handling. It featured a wooden stock, a vertical foregrip, and a more robust receiver. The addition of iron sights and a bayonet lug further distinguished it from its predecessors. Despite these refinements, the Mk V retained the simplicity and ease of production that characterized the Sten series, making it a practical choice for mass production.

Production of the Sten Mk V began in 1944 and continued through the end of the war. Approximately 500,000 units were manufactured, primarily by British factories. While earlier Sten models were distributed widely to both regular and irregular forces, the Mk V was primarily issued to frontline troops, particularly paratroopers and commandos. Its improved ergonomics and appearance were intended to provide soldiers with a more refined and reliable weapon, enhancing confidence and operational effectiveness.

The Sten Mk V saw significant service during the later stages of World War II, including during Operation Market Garden and the liberation of Europe. It became a symbol of British ingenuity, showcasing how a simple, inexpensive weapon could be adapted for greater performance under wartime constraints. Despite its improved design, the Mk V faced criticism for occasional reliability issues and its awkward magazine placement. However, its historical importance and widespread use during critical battles have solidified its place as one of the most notable submachine guns of the era.
