The NSV (Nikitin-Sokolov-Volkov) is a Soviet-designed heavy machine gun chambered in 12.7x108mm, developed in the late 1960s to replace the aging DShK series. Named after its designers, the NSV features a gas-operated action with a rotating bolt, allowing for reliable function even in harsh environments. Its relatively lightweight construction, utilizing modern materials and a streamlined receiver, enabled it to be mounted on a wide array of platforms including tripods, armored vehicles, and anti-aircraft mounts.

Introduced officially in 1971, the NSV rapidly became a standard heavy machine gun in the Soviet military. Its versatility made it a common sight on tanks, particularly as the main anti-aircraft armament on T-72 and T-80 main battle tanks. The infantry version, designated NSVS, featured a robust tripod and optical sight capability for long-range engagements. Production numbers are estimated to be over 25,000 units during the Soviet era, with continued production under license and modification in several countries, including Kazakhstan and India.

The NSV gained notoriety for its accuracy, reliability, and relatively lightweight frame compared to its predecessors. It was extensively used in conflicts ranging from the Soviet-Afghan War to regional wars in Eastern Europe and the Middle East. In the post-Soviet era, Russia began replacing the NSV with the domestically produced Kord machine gun, although many NSVs remain in active service around the world due to their proven performance and ease of maintenance.
