The M1892 Colt was a significant milestone in the evolution of U.S. military sidearms, marking the transition from single-action to double-action revolvers. Developed by Colt and adopted by the U.S. Army in 1892, the revolver was chambered in .38 Long Colt and featured a swing-out cylinder, a revolutionary design at the time that allowed for faster reloading. It served during the Spanish-American War and the Philippine-American War but was criticized for its underpowered cartridge, which was less effective than earlier .45-caliber rounds in combat situations. This led to the eventual replacement of the M1892 with more powerful models, such as the M1911 semi-automatic pistol. Around 37,000 units were produced during its service, and despite its shortcomings, it was an important development in the evolution of modern military revolvers.
